INFORMATION
The South Mountains Marathons are a pair of a collection of trail races, held in beautiful South Mountains State Park in North Carolina. If you get psyched for chilly weather, gorgeous views, steep trails, and super cold creek crossings, then this race is for you! Courses include a good mix of wide double track trails and tight, technical, single track trail. Oh and stairs! Lots and lots of stairs!

Registration & Entry Fees
Registration is open!
Limit of 150 entrants per day.
50k: $100 / Marathon: $90 / Half: $75
Refunds of 75% of entry fee (does not include taxes and fees) will be granted up to October 15th. A refund of 50% of entry fee (does not include taxes and fees) will be granted up until December 15th. After this time, no refunds will be given. We do not allow transfers or deferments in any case at any time.
If the race needs to be canceled for any reason (unforeseen acts of nature or COVID), the race will be run virtually "Tanawha style" (aka on the actual course, not anywhere) if rescheduled dates of January 25th/26th are a no go as well. Please plan your calendar accordingly. No refunds, transfers, or deferrals will be given in the case of race moving to virtual.
Awards
Top three M & F overalls receive hand-made awards.
All finishers receive hand-crafted ceramic medals made by local artist!
50k/MARATHON SPECIFICS
The Numbers
Distance: 31.3 miles/ 26.5 Miles
Elevation Gain: ~ 7,500 ft/ 6,000 ft
Time Limit: 9 hours/ 8 hours
Miles of Doule Track Trail: ~ 17.5 miles/ 14.5 miles
Miles of Single Track Trail: ~ 13.5 miles/ 11 miles
Miles of Pavement: ~ 1 mile
Number of Stairs: ~ 600!!!!
Number of Creek Crossings: 6/5 joyous splashes!!!
Course Description
This course has it all. From wide and smooth double track trails, to tight and technical singletrack trails. Grades from easy and gentle to holy crap this is steep! Views abound along the route and High Shoals Falls is one the most picturesque waterfalls in NC! This course is tough, but rewarding. Please be prepared! Due to length and the climb of the course, experience on long mountain runs with elevation gain is suggested before signing up.
Aid Stations
There are 5 aid stations in the 50k and 4 in the marathon. Aid stations for the 50k come at miles: 5.5, 10.4, 14.5, 20.9, & 25.8.
Aid stations in the marathon come at miles: 5.1, 9.2, 15.6, and 20.5.
Full aid stations will have at a minimum: Water, Gatorade (flavor varies by station,) and assorted soft drinks. Foods include: bananas, potato chips, pretzels, animal cookies, M&Ms, gummi bears, Goldfish, trail mix, PB&J.
